I am at the end of the boardwalk trail. The sun has dipped below the tree line. I am basically out in the middle of the swamp from the perspective that the trail is 2100’ long and I am surrounded by water 360 degrees. It is quite an interesting view and sensation. It is awe inspiring. There is so much vegetation, too. So many trees and bushes. How do trees grow in standing water? Many of the trees look dead, standing in the water like poles with very few short branches, no leaves, no bark. Tall, grey poles. The water is so dark, blackish in color it seems. I don’t know how it does that. I think the water is clear, but I cannot see a bottom. It’s just dark. There are many lily pads. Bushes with green leaves. Stumps of dead trees whose trunks must have fallen long ago. There are no ripples on the water. There is a layered scene of pastels in the sky to the east, the result of sunset. Light blue at the horizon, rising to pink, white, then a darker blue. It is quiet except for the birds: Barred Owl, Brown Thrasher, Eastern Towhee, Gray Catbird, Northern Cardinal, Swamp Sparrow, Winter Wren. It is calm. I can hear my heartbeat …
