Route 128 Bike Rides

April 26 - May 6

Utah RT 128 runs about 45 miles, most of it along the Colorado River, from Moab to I-70 near Cisco. It is a spectacular scenic route, meandering side by side with the river through high canyon walls and occasional valleys between them. There is a good description of the road on the Discover Moab website. My description is less knowledgeable, and it would focus more on experiencing the views with the exhilaration of strenuous exercise. I did three rides up and down the road. It was a windy day each time, making me feel strong, like I was flying, in one direction, making me work harder in the other, but working hard on the bike, that’s one of the fun things about it. It is beneficial, it instills a sense of great satisfaction and fulfilment. It is a variation on the theme of just being there in the moment, feeling wildly alive under a vast blue sky.

There is a paved bike path along the first 2.5 miles of the road. I used this path daily for walks, too, sometimes in the early morning, more often in the night around sunset. I camped at Goose Island Campground for eleven nights. It is at mile 1.5, with the bike path going right past it. I used my tent every night, rather than sleeping in the van. It was nice to sleep on the ground, closer to Earth, it gives a natural comfort sensation to me. And with the great weather, I did not need to use the fly on the tent, sleeping each night with a view to the sky and whatever it was showing of stars and moon.
