I watched the sunset from Wooster Heights. At first, it appeared it would be a relatively quiet sunset in terms of colors. It looked to be a grayscale kind of sky. But over time, it became enriched with various tones of red, pink, orange, and yellow. “Just what color is that?” would be a question difficult to answer. And, if one waits just a minute, the tint changes, evolves, ever so slightly. It is a dynamic palette, the sky.
I had gone for a walk. I noted the time, checking my phone as I left the house to see what time sunset would be, and I planned my walk so I could be back on Wooster Heights just as the Sun dipped below the horizon. I had about 45 minutes. Fantastic. I could do a couple miles. I walked down to Sugar Hollow Road, past the airport runway, past the car dealerships, and turned around at Whole Foods to make my way back. Along my walk, a few jets passed overhead, airlines heading in a westerly direction, loaded with individuals, individuals who were on some adventure perhaps, destination unknown to me.
There could be anywhere between 100 and 300 people on one of those commercial jets, depending on the model. How many are on a vacation, going to or coming home from it? How many are on business of some sort? How many are going to visit family or friends? What else are they up to, as they pass at 35,000 feet over Tom Schmiedel walking along Sugar Hollow Road in Danbury, Connecticut.
As I walked, I wondered, how many of them feel like they are on an adventure? The creative mind is always on an adventure. And here I was, on an adventure called walking out the door, presented with this beauty of a sunset. Almost anything can be an adventure if you want it to be …
