Monument Canyon is home to Independence Monument, Kissing Couple, and several other named rock formations. The trail extends about six miles from canyon rim to a second trailhead at the lower reaches of the canyon. or the opposite direction. I opted to hike down to Independence Monument from the rim, which is about 3.5 miles, then hike back to my starting point. The trail descends about 600' rather quickly through a series of cliff edge scrambles and switchback. It is an adrenaline producing experience, going down as well as coming up on the return trip. After that descent, it continues downhill but at a gradual incline on a comfortable dirt path. From that point, one has the pleasure of gazing up at the canyon walls, rising hundreds of feet above. It was a great place to spend a few hours in my afternoon.
