Lake Mead-Hoover Dam

Friday, October 27, 2023 - Saturday, October 28, 2023

I stayed at Las Vegas Bay Campground two night. On Friday afternoon, I did the ten-mile roundtrip hike from the Lake Mead Visitor Center to Hoover Dam and the O'Callaghan-Tillman Bridge. The photo above is taken from the bridge, looking down on the road approaching Hoover Dam. The hike follows a rail line that supplied the dam during construction. It was built through a series of five short tunnels, wide enough for two tracks. The hike is flat except at the end, where there is some downhill on the trail, followed by seven paved trail switchbacks that puts one on the top floor of the parking garage. There is then a series of stairs numbering 130 steps down to the level of the road that goes over the dam.

On Saturday, I did the 34-mile River Mountain Bike Trail. I did it counter clockwise. It passes mostly through undeveloped land, though in a couple places it crossed over a road (beneath the road in tunnels), and it runs along a set of electrical transmission lines for a few miles, too. It is a hilly ride! Great views and a fantastic workout!
