Hittle Bottom Campground

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Hittle Bottom is a gem of a campground. It is simplicity in the center of a quiet, peaceful, exciting, energizing, desert canyon environment. I know some of those terms seem contradictory. That is the nature of Nature. The Colorado River borders the campground. Since I was sleeping in my tent, I heard the swirling sounds of the river through the night. I also had an inspiring overnight due to waking occasionally and being able to see the Milky Way and stars above. At one point, the Big Dipper was nearly directly overhead, visible through the tent screen.

The geologic formation that surrounds this area is known as the Richardson Amphitheater, named after Dr. Sylvester Richardson. The professor and his wife settled in the valley in the 1880s, with other ranchers and settlers following suit. There is an easy three mile loop trail from the campground that gives a nice feel for the area. Great views. Great place to spend some "down time" and appreciate being in a beautiful place, body, mind, and spirit.
