Death Valley Mesquite Sand Dunes

Wednesday, November 20, 2024

I stopped at Mesquite Sand Dunes and hiked to the highest dune, about 100 feet above the floor. It took about 50 minutes to walk there. Walking on sand is a slow process, especially going up on steep hills. It is a wonderland. In order to reach the highest dune, one has to cross over several others, going up one side, down the other, each divided with a short “valley” of dried mud that has been shaped into geometric forms by the sun and the dryness. At the top of my destination, I could see two other hikers making their way across the top of a ridge below me. Walking along a ridge makes it a longer hike, but it is less steep and therefore easier to do. I took several photos of them. They looked very small far down below me. On my way down, we crossed paths, and I talked with them. They told me they work at Furnace Creek at the Oasis. The Oasis is the umbrella name for the two hotel properties in Furnace Creek, The Inn and The Ranch. They are a couple from the southeast and are traveling the country enjoying national parks as they work, working at those where the company (Fred Harvey) that owns the Oasis has properties. They gave me their phone number and I sent them the photos when I had cell service. I saw them again at their workplace before I left. They sent me some photos as well!
