Death Valley 3: Bike Ride to Stovepipe

Wednesday, November 16

My activity for the day was to ride my bike north to Stovepipe Wells and back. It was a 48 mile round trip, which features a scenic wonderland landscape, a few challenging climbs, not too steep, but with longish grades, and a strong headwind going out, a tailwind coming back. I loved it. Laura spent time writing and drawing, took a bike ride around locally to the Death Valley Airport, and obtained some firewood at the store in “town.”

I want to note with a grin: Laura can be an ambitious and successful scavenger of campsites and local ground-cover when looking for firewood. Over the course of our trip, she found wood at sites for us to use, though at DVNP, she did scavenge one site, only to have me remark that, “You know, there’s someone staying at that site still.” She looked shocked. I pointed out there was a pickup truck in the longish driveway, which she somehow must have missed. She returned the large piece of wood. Author note: the campers left later, the wood still available, she swooped it up.
