Big Bend Cottonwood Campground

Saturday, December 10 - Sunday, December 18, 2023

There are three main campgrounds in Big Bend: Cottonwood, Rio Grande Village, and Chisos Basin. Cottonwood is my favorite because it is small (30 sites, well spaced out), it is very quiet, it does not allow generators, and it is the better of the campgrounds for bicycling. The roads are good, there are plenty of hills if desired, but there is a nice 16 miles out and back with few hills if one wants a "flat" day of riding. Just watch out for horses and cows!

There are multiple Great Horned Owls living here, too, as well as Road Runners, Woodpeckers, Ravens, and other birds.

The campground has nice views of the 1500' cliffs on the Mexico side of the Rio Grande, as well as a broad vista for watching sunrise and sunset.

The coldest nights of my trip were here! it got down to 22 degrees one morning before sunrise. But it warmed up quickly, with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s for the entire ten day stay.

I met several people here, having conversations daily. It's like a little community when you are at Cottonwood, people walking around the dirt road loop, many with their dogs, ready to talk about their travels and ask questions about yours ...
