Image: Shadows Meeting, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
One day back in May, while I was out riding my bike in Moab, heading up a hill on the bike path just past Arches National Park, I passed a couple on their bikes. I said hi and kept my pace. I stopped about a mile farther up the hill, nearing the top at a viewpoint, to take a photo. They soon caught up to me and stopped as well. I learned they (Marie and Andy) lived in Moab, and they have been doing so for 35 years. Andy told me that, when he first moved to Moab, he worked for the National Park Service, first at Canyonlands, then at Arches. He worked five years at each park. Eventually, he opened a bookstore in town, Back of Beyond Books, and running it became their fulltime careers. They had recently sold the business. They are moving to Washington, where they are building a house on property on the Olympic Peninsula. They said they could see Vancouver. “Last move,” they claimed. Their current work involves “rare books and manuscripts.” They were just in Connecticut at a show in Greenwich focused on that.
When I told my friend Jim, with whom I was camping at the time, about meeting them, he was excited. He said he had been in the bookstore many times, that it was a great place. He was disappointed he did not meet them and have a chance to talk. The focus of the store is on the history and development of southwestern USA.
I bring this up because one of the things I talked about with Jim that night was how, it seems to me, there are situations, where we run into other people, when it seems we meet others and the meeting is perhaps not always by chance, that there is possibly something going on, such that people are in proximity to each other as a part of some kind of grand scheme of the universe. He did not seem to agree with that, saying people might attribute some meaning to it, but it’s all just random. I told him I think there’s more to it. I used music as an analogy.
When a song starts playing, there are songs that strike some people in a way that the chords and melody resonate with some, while with others it is not the case. The song does not move them. Some song comes on. You and I might agree we love it, it just hits us in a good way, while for Jim and others, it doesn’t do much. My point was that there are vibrations, frequencies, and wavelengths that emanate from the music, and with some people these phenomena resonate with them, they seem to overlap with a person’s internal vibrations, etc. They are attracted to the music. In a similar way, I said, I think we all have internal phenomena: vibrations, frequencies, wavelengths, and energies. And when we move around in our lives, these factors might play a role in where we go and where we spend our time and, when we come in close proximity with others that have a similar energy, there is an opportunity to meet and talk. And yes, the style of music and the lyrics will play a role in a person’s attraction or not for a song, but I’m talking about how an initial set of chords and sounds might attract some while others not.
Anyway, that’s one of the things we talked about that night, and Jim agreed there was something to the notion of people with similar or like frequencies having some unconscious affinity for each other. I think that, be it Nature, the Universe, God, or however one wants to describe or name it, there is a base framework, an intelligence beyond our mind, and we tap into it unconsciously. It manifests through these “chance” meetings, then it is up to us to take any kind of action. There’s often more than meets the eye, or our conscious thoughts, in our lives.
So, a couple days later, after Sue and Jim left to go back to Boulder, and after I did laundry and grocery shopping, I was back at the campsite. I went for my evening walk around 7:30. I meet this guy walking down the opposite side of the bike path. His name was Bruce. Within our conversation, I ask him where he is from. Moab. He tells me he is from Moab. I tell him how odd that seems, with so many out-of-towners around, that just two days ago I met a couple riding bikes on another place in the bike path, and they were from Moab. I go into it some, about the couple moving to Washington, selling the bookstore, etc.
After I describe the couple, Bruce tells me he is friends with Marie and Andy. He knows them not only through the bookstore. Bruce tells me that, when he moved to Moab, he applied for a job at Canyonlands, and Andy had interviewed and hired him there! Bruce then worked at Canyonlands 27 years! They are friends, though he said they had not talked in a while. So, Bruce learned from me that Marie and Andy are moving to Washington. It was interesting.
So, about the topic of meeting people, connections, vibrations overlapping, personal energy, etc. Was it simply a coincidence I met Marie and Andy, and then a couple days later I met Bruce, connected Moab residents and friends? What do you think? Random occurrences? Something else? Other factors?
