Goblin Valley State Park
Goblins! October 27-29, 2025 I drove from Moab to Goblin Valley on Monday and stayed in the campground two nights. Ad their brochure mentions a couple times, the landscape is other worldly. The Goblins were formed by a similar process of land formation by sedimentation in an ancient inland sea, eventual uplift, and erosion all taking place over a time period of about 140-170 million years. It's a unique environment. Kids love running around and climbing on the Goblins. It's a

Canyonlands National Park - Needles District
October 23-27, 2025 I arrived at Needles In Canyonlands in the evening on Thursday, October 23. It took about two hours to drive from Moab. I had a reservation for one night in B21. I was surprised to see a day open at all when I had checked about two weeks ago. There are only thirteen reservable campsites, and it just so happened there was one site open on one day. In general, it’s all booked. When I have checked back again to see if anything else had opened up, there was ne

Arches National Park 2025
Manti-LaSal Mountains from Devil's Garden Campground, Arches National Park October 19-23, 2025 I arrived at sunset to Arches National Park on Sunday evening. It took me about thirty minutes to park my van in my campsite. The driveway had an awkward pitch, more so than any other site in the campground. There are 53 campsites. I finally figured out the best way to park, on a diagonal across the sloped driveway, so that with the levelers I carry with me, I could park so the bed

Hittle Bottom Campground
My Van with Richardson Amphitheater in the Background October 17-19, 2025 Hittle Bottom Campground is located just west of miler marker 22 on Utah Route 128. I drove there from Colorado National Monument on Friday, October 16, arriving around 10:30 AM. I found an open campsite, #14, and I think it is the same site I stayed at in May 2023. The landscape and views around the campground are wonderful. I was thinking to myself how lucky to be here, how wonderful that was, too.

Colorado 2025
Colorado National Monument - Morning Sunrise on the Rim Trail Thursday, October 16, 2025 I arrived at Cherry Creek State Park at 1PM, check-in time, though I did not plan that way exactly. I left Quad Cities on Friday, October 10. I had driven to a rest area near Council Bluffs, Iowa and stayed the night there. On Saturday I drove across some of Nebraska and spent the night at Love’s Truckstop in North Platte. On Sunday I drove to Cherry Creek. The only downside to the drive

The New Next Thing
Watching Sunset over the Mississippi River October 6-19, 2025 I began my next iteration of “road trip” heading west on Sunday, October 5. I had a late start, around 3PM. I drove 335 miles to a rest stop on I-80 near DuBois, Pennsylvania. I had a great sleep there. I woke early and began driving again around 6AM, making decent time as I continued on I-80 through Ohio, Indiana, and into Illinois. I stopped for gas a couple times, but mostly I kept driving until I took a thirty-
